COVID-19 IMPACT: Long Island Real Property Tax Alert

June 03, 2020

Suffolk Tax Due Date Extension comes too late for most.

At the last minute, payment of second half Suffolk County Taxes was extended for 3 weeks but with a catch.  For those that did not pay to their respective town by May 31, payments may now be made without interest or penalty but must be payable to the Suffolk County Comptroller thru June 20, 2020 at

Office of the Suffolk County Comptroller
330 Center Drive,
Riverhead, NY 11901.

You must enclose your payment stub from your Town.  The County Center will have a drop box in the lobby. Hours are Monday – Friday 9-5 pm. The lobby will NOT be open on weekends.

Any Tax Relief in sight? Not on the amount but on the timing.

There is legislation pending in Albany to allow tax payments to be further delayed and to be made in installments as opposed to the current set up of all or nothing by half.  A three week extension does not help much but a longer delay and a monthly installment program could help property owners and tenants.  As with all pending legislation, it does nothing until passed and signed.  Also, if passed and signed, the law would require the local municipality to adopt the program.
