Designed for both newer appointees and seasoned practitioners, this presentation offers practical guidance for serving as court-appointed counsel for alleged incapacitated persons (AIPs) and as a court evaluator in Article 81 guardianship proceedings under the New York Mental Hygiene Law.
Attendees will gain insight into the full arc of an Article 81 proceeding from the initial appointment to the hearing. Topics include effective techniques for communicating with AIPs, understanding the scope of the court evaluator’s role, preparing reports that genuinely assist the court, and advocating effectively at a hearing.
