The deadline to challenge property tax assessments for the 2026 tax year for the majority of Westchester County taxpayers is rapidly approaching on June 16, 2026. Unlike some counties that utilize a single, countywide tax appeal deadline[1], Westchester is comprised of thirty (30) separate assessing jurisdictions, including towns, cities, and villages, each with its own tax appeal filing period.
The critical date for the majority of tax appeal filings is the third Tuesday in June, which this year falls on June 16. In fact, of the thirty (30) assessing jurisdictions in Westchester County — twenty-two (22) have a June 16 appeal deadline (including nineteen (19) towns and three (3) cities). Whereas, five villages maintain February grievance dates and several cities utilize unique deadlines earlier in the assessment calendar (New Rochelle revised its deadline to February)[2]. Property owners should confirm the deadline applicable to their municipality and begin gathering supporting documentation immediately.
Taxpayers in municipalities such as Bedford, Greenburgh, Harrison, Mamaroneck, Rye Town, Scarsdale, Yorktown, Mount Vernon, Peekskill, and the City of Rye have a limited amount of time remaining to file a tax appeal. Missing the June 16 deadline will result in a loss of the right to challenge the 2026 assessment. Tax appeals must be filed with the local assessing jurisdiction where the property is located, and each municipality maintains its own filing procedures and requirements.
The initial administrative tax appeal review is often limited and will require the filing of a court petition after the administrative period ends. Taxpayers may benefit from consulting an attorney experienced in real property tax assessment appeals to ensure that their grievance is properly prepared and timely filed.
With the June 16, 2026 deadline now just weeks away, property owners should act promptly to preserve their right to challenge an excessive assessment and potentially reduce their future property tax burden.
