Microsoft recently has offered a buyout plan to about 60,000 employees, or over a quarter of its total workforce. This offer would grant workers the ability to leave with severance pay, with the goal of encouraging some employees to voluntarily quit the company.
Labor & Employment Partner Domenique Camacho Moran was featured in Inc. Magazine’s article “Microsoft Is Spending $190 Billion. Now It’s Paying Thousands of Employees to Leave” examining the company’s latest voluntary buyout program.
From the article:
Employment law expert Domenique Camacho Moran discussed this previous wave of buyouts with Fortune, and described it as a way for companies to reduce their head count without resorting to mass layoffs.
“The voluntary exit option gives the employer the ability to say, ‘It’s not about the fact that we don’t think you’re doing a good job, but if you’re thinking about it’s time for me to move on. I’m going to incentivize you to do that because we need to cut some staff,” said Moran.
