Sustainable Long Island

January 01, 2010

Advocating for the preservation of Long Island open spaces and environment while promoting economic development is the mission of Sustainable Long Island, a non-profit group founded in 2002 with pro-bono help from Farrell Fritz. Members of the firm’s Tax practice group, including Louis Vlahos, helped it establish itself as a tax-exempt organization.

Since its founding, Sustainable Long Island has focused much of its efforts on the clean-up and redevelopment of Long Island’s 6,800 brownfields, former industrial or commercial parcels of land, where businesses have long since departed. Actual or perceived contamination is preventing new construction. As a leading advocate for Smart Growth, its goal is to help Long Island’s communities revitalize their economic centers through redevelopment, so that existing open spaces can be preserved.
