Helping NYC Public School Children Get & Stay Healthy

April 07, 2011

Wellness in the Schools (WITS) was created in 2005 by a group of New York City public school parents united in the conviction that healthier bodies make healthier minds. WITS inspires healthy eating, environmental awareness and fitness as a way of life, through partnerships with school leadership, teachers, chefs, coaches, parents and kids.

Farrell Fritz commercial litigation and labor & employment associate, Heather Harrison, was introduced to WITS via Lawyers Alliance for New York, a provider of business and transactional legal services for nonprofit organizations. She met Alison Hunter, a WITS board member and former attorney, with whom she immediately fostered a nice working relationship. Through Alison, Heather learned WITS needed to have an employee handbook prepared.

A new mom, Forest Hills (Queens, NY) resident and community supporter, Heather was touched by WITS’ mission and agreed to assist the organization, on a pro bono basis, prepare their employee handbook. She also counseled them on several other matters, including employee classification and wage and hour issues. Heather successfully completed the aforementioned in time for the 2010/11 school year.
