Professionals Address Issues Surrounding Workplace Violence

September 23, 2003

– On October 7, some of Long Island’s leading employment law and security professionals will be gathering to address issues surrounding violence in the workplace — a topic of increased concern to today’s workforce. The program, entitled “The Growing Phenomenon of Workplace Violence: How Vulnerable is Your Workplace Environment and What Can You Do For Safety’s Sake?” will be held at the Huntington Hilton from 8:00 a.m. until noon.

Co-sponsored by Farrell Fritz, P.C. and Summit Security Services, the program will both explore effective ways to implement workplace policies that will help identify volatile employees and discuss the employer’s role in dealing with potential on-site violence to best protect employees. In addition, the program will feature the latest information about how to ensure the safety of a company’s physical plant, and address other factors that impact workplace safety and security, such as domestic violence and sexual harassment. “With so many concerns about workplace safety these days, it’s crucial for today’s employers to recognize the signs of potential security threats at their companies, assess their current and future risks and learn strategies for both deterring and dealing with potential on-site violence,” says Kathleen Tomlinson, an employment law partner at Farrell Fritz, P.C.  “There are a number of things that employers can be doing to ensure that they are creating a safer workplace for their employees, as well as a number of lesser known State and Federal laws of which employers need to be aware to design compliance programs at their companies.” In addition to Tomlinson, speakers at the program include Robert J. Creighton, former Suffolk County Police Commissioner and now Chief Investigator for Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office; John Nolan, former Nassau County Homicide Commander and now Director of Corporate Services at Summit Security Services; Raymond L. Crawford, Chief of Department, Nassau County Police Department; Roberta Richin, Psychologist, Advancing Organizational Success and Safety; and Steven N. Davi of Farrell Fritz, P.C. The panel will present valuable information about existing and emerging legislation concerning workplace safety, and present practical advice for employers to follow when hiring and managing employees. Specific strategies for securing a safer physical workplace building will also be presented and discussed by the panel.
